How much beef comes home?

Estimated packaged beef from a 1,000–1,100 lb calf at live weight.

Take-home weight is different from hanging weight.

These rounded planning ranges assume 60–65% of live weight becomes hanging weight, then 60–70% of hanging weight becomes packaged beef. Actual amounts vary with the animal, trimming and bone-in or boneless selections. Beef is priced at $6 per lb of actual hanging weight, plus processing and kill fees.

Plan ahead for pickup

Make a little room
for a lot of good meals.

Use these estimates to plan your empty freezer space before choosing a share.

QUARTER BEEF
4–5 cu ft

A smaller space commitment.
A good place to start.

HALF BEEF
8–10 cu ft

More room for family favorites.
Clear a dedicated section.

WHOLE BEEF
15–20 cu ft

Plan for a large dedicated freezer,
or split the space across households.

Count the empty space.

A freezer’s listed capacity includes the room your other food already uses. Check the capacity on its label or in the manual, then allow for what’s already inside and leave extra room for bulky cuts and easy access.

General planning estimates, not a guaranteed fit. Animal size, cut choices and packaging affect the space needed. As a guide, allow about 1 cubic foot per 35–40 lb of packaged beef. We’ll help estimate your order before you reserve. Storage guidance: MSU Extension ↗

Before you order.

What is hanging weight?

The carcass weight after slaughter, before cutting and packaging. That is the weight used to price your beef; your packaged take home weight will be lower.
